When working with large living rooms, the key is to create distinct zones that make the space feel cozy, functional, and inviting. By embracing all-new furniture, creative space planning, and adding personalized touches like a charming reading nook we are doing just that.
When my client reached out about refreshing her spacious living room, she already had some furniture, but they weren’t working well in the space. My design approach always begins with analyzing the existing elements to determine what can be repurposed. The goal is to create a stunning transformation while also being mindful of the budget.
All of the pictures are in my portfolio but here are some before & after:

Adding Warmth with Color
The house had gray tones throughout, so I decided to introduce a beautiful muted green on two walls. This subtle yet striking addition helped break up the gray, add depth, and make the fireplace truly stand out as a focal point. The new color brought warmth and personality to the space, giving it a cozy and inviting feel.
Creating a Cozy Conversation Area
One of the biggest challenges with large living rooms is making them feel intimate and inviting. To address this, I defined a cozy conversation area by incorporating a large area rug and arranging the new seating pieces closer together. This prevented the furniture from feeling scattered and helped foster a warm and connected atmosphere.

Repurposing Existing Pieces
I noticed that even though the built-in fireplace had a mounted TV above it, there was also a TV console next to it with no TV, just a small electric fireplace and some decor.
Since the console wasn’t serving a functional purpose, I repurposed it by removing its base and keeping the two bookcases. By pushing them together and styling them with meaningful decor, personal mementos, and books, I was able to create a beautiful space. To complete the area, I added a cozy swivel accent chair, a soft throw blanket, and lighting for reading, transforming the space into a charming and warm reading nook.

Enhancing Natural Light and Adding Dimension
With only one large window in the room, dressing it beautifully was essential. I selected stunning printed drapes and installed them with curtain rings to make opening and closing effortless for adults and kids, an important consideration given the high ceilings.

Enhancing Natural Light with Mirrors and Accent Lighting
Additionally, I introduced three arched mirrors in varying sizes, placed side by side to create a ladder effect. This not only added visual interest but also helped reflect more light throughout the space, making it feel brighter and more open. The other light fixture added to the space was another unique floor lamp, adding different sources of lighting is so important, given the fact that my client did not care for additional end tables a floor lamp was the way to go.

The Final Result
This transformation is about more than just furniture...it’s about creating a home that reflects our client’s lifestyle while making the most of every inch of the space. From a cozy reading nook to elegant drapery, enhanced natural light, and a cohesive color palette, this living room is set to become a haven of comfort and style.
